ECTS

Almost all universities based in Eurpoe use ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) of grading, which is a standard for comparing the study attainment and performance of students of higher education across the European Union. In the context of a degree program in Europe:

  1. 1 academic year = 60 ECTS credits (generally equivalent to 45 credit hours)
  2. 1 ECTS credit = 25-30 hours of study (depending on the country/institution)
  3. A typical Bachelor’s program = 180 ECTS credits, completed in 3 years full-time
  4. A typical Master’s program = 120 ECTS credits, completed in 2 years full-time

ECTS credits are designed to make it easier for students to transfer credits between institutions and countries, promoting mobility and recognition.
